Sted: NIBR, Periferien (HG447), Holbergs gate 1, 4th floor Dato og tid: fredag 24. mars 2017 kl. 11.00 - 12.30
After a controversial impeachment process, Brazil's political crisis is not over yet. Current President Temer has to deal with the ongoing Lava-Jato investigation while trying to implement ambitious reforms aimed to recover the economy. What are the prospects for his government and for the future of the Brazilian political system? In this guest lecture, Professor Marcus André Melo will address this broad question arguing that Brazil's future lies in a trilemma: Temer as a president, the Lava-Jato investigation, and an agenda of reforms.
Professor Melo is an assistant professor at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco and is a leading scholar about political stability, party systems and institutional accountability in Brazil. His last book, Brazil in Transition - Beliefs, Leadership, and Institutional Change, discusses how the political consensus about social inclusion is a key element to understand Brazil's development during the last decades.
