International studies and migration

Politics, governance and civil society in Africa, Asia, America and Europe.

About the department

The department conducts research on how governments and civil society organisations in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America handles today's great challenges. Challenges connected to democratic participation, migration and integration, climate changes, minority politics, urban development, industrial policy and welfare, conflicts and inclusive development.

Geographically we have a strong focus on Norway and the Nordic countries, as well as the BRICS countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. We carry out many of our projects in countries affected by violent upheavals.

We work interdisciplinary to analyse the migration patterns of the immigrant population. We look at various groups’ integration into the housing and labour markets, and the importance of introductory programmes and NGO involvement. An important question we keep asking is how migrants navigate to achieve a desired standard of living in their new country. Issues related to the possibility of living transnational lives, with connections to both country of origin and the country in which one lives, is increasingly an important field.

Relations between governance, politics and civil society is important to us. We study power and people; we look at indigenous organizations, trade unions, social movements, women's organisations, terrorist groups, gangs and charity organisations. We challenge national and international efforts to achieve sustainable urban development, equitable distribution, improved public health, and women's economic and political participation.

Most of our projects are empirical studies in close cooperation with local partners.
