Church networks and peacebuilding in South-Kivu and the Great Lakes RegionAuthor(s):
The Catholic and protestant churches represent the most powerful organisation in civil society in Eastern Congo, with a presence at all levels of society, and in the most remote places. The religious organisations and church leaders have the potential to influence the processes of reconciliation, reintegration and peaceful coexistence with their presence from remote villages at the local level to the diplomatic dialogue at a regional and international level. In DRC, the churches are recognised as part of civil society, and have their affiliated faith-based civil society organisations that work on human rights, gender and peacebuilding. Both the catholic and the protestant church networks have also received considerable international support.
