THANK YOU for making this conference a memorable one!

Appreciation to all 278 delegates from 43 countries, keynote-speakers, committees, panels, sponsors and supporters for making the 2 International Conference For Design Education Researchers such a great success. We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences for hosting the conference under the joint auspices of the Design Research Society (DRS) and the CUMULUS organization. It has been an honor for us that the agreement between the two organizations was signed here during the conference.

The challenging theme of the conference focusing on design learning for tomorrow was particularly innovative in its scope. With the strap line ‘Design Education from Kindergarten to PhD’ it has been possible to embrace a broad interdisciplinary approach. With the underlying idea that sustainable design solutions should include more than professional designers, design could be seen not only as a specialist discipline at degree level and above, but also as a core component in general education.

The very positive response to this theme has been demonstrated by the great number of papers for the conference from academics active in relevant research and scholarship. Researchers from more than 74 universities have undertaken a rigorous double blind review process used to select papers. This has resulted in the 165 papers which were presented at the conference, and which are included in the conference proceedings. They cover a wide range of approaches, and have been grouped into related areas, such as the design curriculum, the philosophy of design education and design education for non-designers. The range and richness of the papers amply illustrate the strength of research in design education in the international community of design academics.

We are very much looking forward to meet again at the next DRS//CUMULUS conference: The 3 International Conference for Design Education Researchers in 2015.

Design Learning for Tomorrow - Design Education from Kindergarten to PhD

Designed artefacts and solutions influence our lives and values, both from a personal and societal perspective. Designers, decision makers, investors and consumers hold different positions in the design process, but they all make choices that will influence our future visual and material culture. To promote sustainability and meet global challenges for the future, professional designers are dependent on critical consumers and a design literate general public.  For this purpose design education is important for all. We propose that design education in general education represents both a foundation for professional design education and a vital requirement for developing the general public’s competence for informed decision making.

We invite submissions along the following themes:
  • Philosophy of design education
  • Design curriculum
  • Design knowledge
  • Design education for non-designers
  • Research informed designed education – Design education informing research
  • Multidisciplinary design education
  • Challenges in design education methods
  • Assessment
  • eLearning and Design Education
  • Internationalisation of Design Education

We also conduct workshops and symposia.

Organised by Faculty of Technology, Art and Design, Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences, DRS (Design Research Society), and   CUMULUS (the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media)
