This is a small scale conference that encourages progress in international comparative research, debate and discussion. It is not be confused with the main ENHR conference (to be held in Albania in September). The aim of the ENHR Comparative Housing Policy Working Group (CHPWG) is to:

  • promote the comparative international study of housing policies and systems;
  • provide a forum for the assessment of Europe-wide policies relating to housing and of the potential role of the European Union and in this regard;
  • promote the development of comparative methodologies; and
  • collect and disseminate information on housing policies in individual countries.

The annual CHPWG meeting presents researchers across ENHR with a unique opportunity to share their work and participate directly in discussions on the comparative role of housing in social welfare, economic solidarity and environmental sustainability. Participating also builds comparative research capacity and strengthens pan European research collaborations in this important field.

The meeting will take place during 22-23 June in the heart of Oslo and will be jointly hosted by the Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR) and Norwegian Social Research (NOVA), which together form part of the Centre for Welfare and Labour Research (SVA), Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences.

The goal of the Oslo meeting is to progress comparative research through presentation, discussion and feedback. Papers will be assigned a discussant, but are not refereed or published by the WG.

There are limited places for participants and all abstracts go through a selection process based on relevance and coherence. Please send your abstract early to jardar.sorvoll@nova.hioa.no, addressing the aim of the CHWG and also this year’s theme promoting interdisciplinary research: Making the Connections, outlined below .

The Oslo Theme – Making the Connections

The multi- disciplinary institutes (NIBR, NOVA and SVA) hosting this meeting invite participants to outline comparative approaches and methodologies relevant to the study of housing policy. Perspectives and debates on comparative housing policy from a range of disciplines are welcome, including economics, urban theory, sociology, political science, history, critical geography and cultural anthropology.

Presenters are particularly encouraged to address the relationship between housing policies operating across different geographical territories (national, regional, local) to other areas of public policy, such as economic development, environmental sustainability, social inclusion and welfare services.

We also welcome papers that address comparative developments in housing policies over time and have a more holistic and historic focus or look forward to assess prospects for future housing policy development over time and space.

  1. In summary, the Oslo meeting aims to focus on Making the Connections :
  2. Between comparative approach and methodology
  3. Between a range of academic disciplines and debates
  4. Between geographical scales (local, regional, national) of housing systems and policies
