Intercultural Communication in Educational Settings

This course is designed for students working or planning to work in culturally diverse educational settings. The course gives an understanding of various concepts related to intercultural interaction, and aims to develop and promote competence in intercultural communication in educational settings.

The Faculty of Education and International Studies offers a one semester part-time course in Intercultural communication in educational settings . The module is a joint venture between LUI/HiOA and Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia (HSPUR), St. Petersburg.

The course is based on blended learning methods and academic mobility: one gathering in Oslo (week 4, 2017) and one gathering in St. Petersburg (week 17, 2017). The course is offered in English. 

The course comprises two main areas:

Conceptualizing intercultural interaction:

  • Culture, education as a part of culture, subculture, identity (self-awareness, diaspora), ethnicity
  • Intercultural competence, discourse, stereotypes, dialogical approach, communication (verbal/non-verbal), communication styles, language and culture, sign language and culture

Promoting competence in intercultural communication in educational settings:

  • Learning culture and teaching culture (ethnocentrism, gender, power and authority, religion)
  • Learning and teaching in multicultural environments
  • Diversity training, learning and teaching styles
  • Building relationship in diverse educational settings (teacher-pupil, teacher-teacher, teacher-parent, pupil-pupil, etc.)
  • Best practices of intercultural communication in educational settings

During the course the students must submit three obligatory course assignments within given deadlines.
In combination with other studies/courses the course may qualify the candidate for work in any sector which deals with intercultural communication in educational settings, in addition to competence of teaching in multicultural contexts.

Organization

The students will participate in two separate weeks of tutoring; one week in Oslo (week 4, 2017) and one week in St. Petersburg (week 17, 2017), in addition to participating in tutoring online. 

For the week in St. Petersburg, travel from Oslo and accommodation in St. Petersburg will be covered for all the students.

Will not be offered in 2018.

Admission requirements

Bachelor degree or Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning. Candidates with bachelor from HiOA will be prioritized in the recruitment process.

If the degree is from a non-Norwegian university, it must be based on no less than 3 years of study beyond Norwegian matriculation level. The student should have a working knowledge of English.
