He studied philosophy at Augsburg College in Minnesota and was a Fulbright scholar at KU Leuven in Belgium. He obtained his PhD in general linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin.

“I like lots of things in Norway. There's a good quality of life, it’s a beautiful country and it's possible to do great things at work.

I was born in New York and I grew up in Minnesota. When I finished my PhD I wanted to explore the world more and moved to Trondheim.

I worked at the university there before applying for a job in Tromsø, and lived and worked at the world’s northernmost university for over 20 years until I came here.

Gender balance, open access and leadership are topics I'm really interested in, because they all contribute to making universities better.”
