Seeking placements for refugee engineers

HiOA and NTNU have developed a complementary study programme for refugees with an education in natural science or technology, which includes practical training in enterprises.

The programme has been developed on assignment for the Ministry of Education and Research, and its objective is to increase the opportunities for refugees from non-EU/EEA countries to practise their profession in Norway.

The first class of students will start the programme in August 2018

The study programme is worth 60 ECTS credits, and during the course of one academic year, the students will improve their Norwegian language skills, learn about the Norwegian labour market and what it is like to be an engineer in Norway.

Practice-oriented programme

The students receive targeted, up-to date teaching in ICT and in topics linked to their area of expertise, and they undergo practical training in an enterprise.

The Minister of Education and Research has said that the goal is to enable people to enter the labour market more quickly. It is important for refugees to be able to use their expertise.

HiOA believes it is particularly important to link this education to practical training in the labour market. For the individual refugee, this is a clear opportunity to show off their expertise, and the enterprise gains the expertise and insight they need.

The students admitted to the programme have an approved education at a level equivalent, at least, to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree.

HiOA would like to come into contact with enterprises

Many of the refugees have extensive experience from their home country. Having improved their Norwegian language skills and understanding of society, they can be a good investment for an enterprise.

HiOA wishes to come into contact with enterprises that are interested in sharing this social responsibility, that regard the refugees as an opportunity and that are willing to invest in them.

HiOA will provide a network and mentoring.
