As a student at HiOA, you can apply for affordable student housing through the Student Welfare Association (SiO).

How to apply for housing

Three steps to getting a room

1. Apply for housing as soon as possible  and no later than the deadline.

The sooner you apply, the better are your chances of getting the room you want. As long as you have already applied to HiOA, you can apply for housing.

 Deadlines

  • 31 May Autumn semester
  • 31 October Spring semester

2. In the application choose:  

  • single, furnished room.
  • either 1 January or 1 August as your moving in date

Contracts and payment of rent always start on these dates, regardless of the actual date you’ll be moving in.

Arriving more than 14 days after the move-in date? Let SiO know as soon as possible to avoid cancellation.

If your first choice has no availability, your second, third or sixth choice might.

3. SiO will only give you one offer. Accept it.

You should receive two emails from SiO:

  • One email confirming that your application is registered including a Personal Identity Number (this can take a few days to process after you have applied).
  • One email after the application deadline with a housing offer. Log in to My Page with the Personal Identity Number and accept the offer as soon as possible.

Even if what SiO offers is not what you initially wanted, please accept as you will only receive one offer. It is better to change rooms after you have arrived in Oslo, than to take the risk of arriving with no accommodation option.

How do I fill out the application form?

'No, nothing available'

Many of the student houses are marked 'No, nothing available' or 'yes, a few available.' This is their current status and not their status when you will be arriving. Please ignore this and choose the student houses that you are interested in.

Which housing options should I choose?

Always choose a single room when applying. We also recommend choosing a furnished room.

We recommend you choose the cheaper housing options, even if it often appears that there are no available rooms in the relevant student house.

When it comes to location, students at Kjeller Campus should choose Åråsen Student House, the only accommodation option located at Kjeller. Students at Pilestredet Campus can choose between the rest of the student houses as they are all located in the Oslo area. See our student housing map for more detailed locations.

In the application I’m asked to fill in my Norwegian ID number - what should I write?

You simply fill in your date of birth in the format DDMMYY if you do not have a Norwegian ID number.

Am I guaranteed housing through SiO?

If you are an exchange student from a partner institution or an international student accepted to one of our Master’s Degree programmes taught in English you are in principle guaranteed a single room when you follow the instructions above. 

However, as Oslo receives more and more international students we cannot guarantee that all of you will receive an offer of accommodation. HiOA will do everything possible to ensure that all our international students are assigned accommodation through SiO.

Please note that students who already live in Norway, freemovers, and PHD students are not guaranteed housing.

My application was rejected because of my age, can you help me?

There is no age limit for international students applying for accommodation through SiO if you come from a partner university or if you are enrolled in a Master’s Degree programmes taught in English. Please send an e-mail to international@hioa.no  and we will contact SiO on your behalf.

What does student housing cost?

Monthly rental prices start from approximately 3500 NOK. The different prices are always shown in the application and in SiO's price list. For most student rooms, electricity is not included in the rent.

In addition to monthly rental and the electricity bill, you have to pay a deposit equivalent to 2 months' rent. The deposit will be returned to you when you move out if you comply with SiO's contract terms.

Always pay your rent on time. Late payments will generate heavy administration fees.

When can I expect to get a room?

Rooms are allocated before your arrival to Norway, so make sure you have received and confirmed you housing contract before travelling to Norway. The contract will be sent to you by email and must be signed on SiO's My Page to be valid.

If you haven’t received an answer from SiO three weeks after the application deadline, please send an e-mail to international@hioa.no and we’ll contact SiO on your behalf.

What is SiO's My Page? And how do I log in and use it?

SiO's My Page is SiO's online portal. You register using the Personal Identity Number sent to you by SiO when your application was first registered. You can find more information and instructions on SiO's website 

When do I pay the deposit?

You will need to pay a deposit when signing the contract on SiO's My Page. The deposit is equivalent to two months' rent. Send the proof of payment to SiO by email or post as soon as you have paid. Information about the sum you will need to deposit and where to transfer it will be sent to you by SiO.

How do I get my key?

Follow the instructions on SiO's website

Make sure you arrive during SiO opening hours.

If you will arrive outside opening hours, SiO will meet you with the key, but they charge an extra fee. If you have to outside their opening hours, fill in SiO's contact form with the heading: ' Collecting keys after opening hours ' no later than three working days before arrival.

It is possible for someone else to pick up your keys on your behalf. Please fill in SiO's contact form well in advance to find out what you need to do to arrange this.

What can I expect from student accommodation?

The standard of the rooms is simple, student standard.

Included in the furnished rooms is a bed, cupboard/ closet, desk, chair, and bookshelf.  However, curtains, pillows, duvets (quilts/ comforters), sheets and reading lamps are not provided. Kitchen utensils are also not provided, even if you have a shared kitchen. You can bring or buy these items after arrival.

Internet is available in the rooms, but normally by cable, not WiFi.

You will be provided with a laundry card when you get your key. You can purchase laundry credits to use in the common laundry facilities.

Each tenant is responsible for the cleaning of kitchen utensils and equipment, the cooker/ stove top, sink and counter area used in the kitchen, your own room and your own bedding/ linen and towels.

What do I need to consider when moving out?

SiO needs a notice of termination two or three months before you leave, calculated from the 15th or last day of the month. The length depends on your type of accommodation.  Contact SiO for more details.

How can I make sure I get my deposit back?

When you move out, the deposit will be returned to you given that you have complied with SiO's rules and regulations as stated in the contract. One of the things you must remember is to clean your room properly before moving out. To make sure it had been cleaned sufficiently, SiO has made a checklist and you can book an inspection
